Tauchnitz Editions

The work of Todd & Bowden

In 1988, the husband and wife team of William Todd and Ann Bowden published a bibliographical history of the Tauchnitz Editions that ran to over 1000 pages.  'Tauchnitz International Editions in English 1841-1955', published by the Bibliographical Society of America, was a monumental work that for the first time made it possible to identify first printings with a reasonable degree of accuracy.   Over a period of many years Todd & Bowden examined in detail the Tauchnitz Collections in a large number of libraries across Europe and America, and also built up their own Tauchnitz Collection, which they subsequently sold to the British Library.  Their Tauchnitz bibliography has more recently been re-published, and is available from Oak Knoll Books.

This website does not attempt to reproduce, replace or compete with the work of Todd & Bowden, but it will aim to supplement it by providing additional information that has become available since their book was published.

Wiesbaden ‘Students’ Series Sonderbände’ 1952-1954

All known editions of volume 2 in this series are based on the 1947 Hamburg edition P2, and are therefore in a different format from volumes 1 and 3.  Volume 3 of the series was first published in 1953, not 1954 as indicated in T&B.  To continue the bibliographical style in Todd & Bowden requires definition of two further title styles and imprints as follows:

3      [within a frame] 1952 | Brandstetter Verlag | Wiesbaden

4      [at foot:] Copyright Edition | Brandstetter Verlag G.M.B.H. | Wiesbaden | 1953

The wrapper design of the first printing of volume 2 is also based on the Tauchnitz 1947 edition.  Later printings (with no mention of Tauchnitz) incorporate the heading ‘Bernard Shaw’s plays’, as on volumes 1 and 3.  Revised bibliographical entries for volumes 2 and 3 below.
