Tauchnitz Editions

Tauchnitz Editions I'm looking for

There are vast numbers of Tauchnitz Editions that I am trying to find copies of - far too many to list here, so all I can do is give some indications of the kind of books I'm interested in.  The most important aspect is that I am collecting first printings in Tauchnitz, as far as it's possible to identify them.   That's not easy, so I give more details below, according to the type of book.

 1.  Paperbacks in the main series - 'Collection of British Authors'

2.  Hardbacks in the main series - 'Collection of British Authors'

 3. Tauchnitz 'Series for the Young'

4.  Bookmarks, catalogues and other ephemera

5.  Shakespeare plays

6.  Tauchnitz Collection of German Authors

7.  The Tauchnitz Magazine

8.  English Text-Books and Tauchnitz Pocket Library

9.  Tauchnitz Students' Series

Paperbacks in the main series - 'Collection of British Authors'

How to identify a first printing

In most cases the real printing date is shown at the top of the rear cover - e.g. April 1907, as in the photos below.  This may be very different from the date on the title page, which always continues to show the year of first printing in Tauchnitz, even on reprints many years later.  If the date on the rear cover is later than the date on the title page, then it cannot be a first printing.

Reprint format on the left, first printing format (1904 onwards) on the right                         First printing format before 1904

If the date on the rear cover is from January 1904 onwards, then a first printing can also be identified by the two column format shown on the right of the first picture above.  Reprints have a single column format as on the left.  Reprints also list other titles only on the outside rear cover, whereas on first printings the list is spread over both inside covers as well as the rear outside cover.  Before 1904 the first printing format is as shown on the right above, but other aspects are the same.

Which ones I am looking for?

My interest is mainly in first printings from 1925 or earlier.  From 1926 onwards I am only interested in first printings of the following volume numbers:

 4758, 4759, 4770, 4780, 4809, 4814, 4828, 4831, 4833, 5004, 5018, 5033, 5038, 5246.

Hardbacks in the main series - 'Collection of British Authors'

How to identify a first printing

Most hardbacks, particularly from the 19th century, are private bindings.  The binder would normally discard the paperback wrappers and often the half-title page as well, showing the series number in the Collection of Btritish authors.  Unfortunately without the half-title, printings are almost impossible to identify.  I am only interested in copies where the half-title is present.

Assuming the half-title is present, the next question is how many other titles by the same author are listed on the back of the half-title.  For books in more than one volume, this list will usually be on the back of the half-tiltle of volume I, although it can be in volume II. or later volumes.  The basic rule is that for a first printing the half-title should list only other books that were published by Tauchnitz before that book.  In practice it's very difficult to determine that without access to Todd & Bowden, which records the number of other titles listed on the first printing.

It's worth noting also that first printings up to volume 246 (in 1852), always show the publisher on the title page as 'Bernh. Tauchnitz Jun.' rather than 'Bernhard Tauchnitz' and first printings up to volume 500 (in 1860) always show the series number on the half-title in roman numerals.  Later printings may also have these characteristics, so they are a necessary but not a sufficient condition, to identify first printings.

Which ones I am looking for?

For hardbacks my interest is mainly in editions before 1908.  To identify first printings, I will usually ask to know the number of titles listed on the back of the half-title.  For particular books, there may also be other conditions to establish a first printing.  There are vast numbers of titles I'm interested in, particularly books by women authors, such as Mrs. Oliphant, Mrs. Hungerford, Matilda Betham-Edwards, M.E. Braddon, Dinah M. Craik ('The author of John Halifax, Gentleman'), Mrs. Edwardes, Amelia B. Edwards, Emma Marshall, Florence Marryat, Helen Mathers, Mrs. Campbell Praed, Mrs. Riddell, Miss Thackeray, Mrs. Henry Wood and Charlotte M. Yonge.  But many books by other authors too, both male and female.

Tauchnitz 'Series for the Young'

I am looking for copies of the following volumes in either paperback or hardback.  They must have the half-title bound in, showing the series number in the Tauchnitz Series for the Young, and meet the other conditions shown.

Bookmarks, catalogues and other ephemera

I am interested in almost any Tauchnitz bookmarks, either in the standard format as shown or in other formats.  Also any of the Monthly Descriptive lists as shown.  These descriptive lists were loosely inserted into Tauchnitz books, and differ from the standard monthly catalogues bound in at the back of most volumes.

I am also looking for copies of the Complete Catalogues.  These come in various formats as shown below, including some German language editions referred to as 'Führer durch die Tauchnitz Edition'.

Tauchnitz editions of Shakespeare

Tauchnitz issued editions of Shakespeare plays over a period of 100 years in various different formats, both as individual plays and as combined editions.  Early editions are dated 1843 on the title page and later editions are mostly dated 1866.

I am generally not interested in combined editions or in copies dated 1866 or later, other than that I would like to get a copy of 'Pericles' with this date. What I am interested in is any copies of single plays dated 1843, preferably in paperback, but also in hardback copies.  Ideally the title page refers to 'Bernh. Tauchnitz Jun.' rather than 'Bernhard Tauchnitz'.

The Tauchnitz Collection of German Authors

There are just over 50 books in this series, found in both paperback and hardback, including a soft red cloth binding, produced for Sampson Low in London.  I am looking for copies in any binding, but only first printings and with the half-title bound in, showing the series number in the Tauchnitz Collection of German Authors.

The key to recognising first printings on these is generally the form of the other publishers’ names and addresses shown on the title page below the name of Bernhard Tauchnitz.  In particular there are different forms of the Sampson Low imprint.

1. ‘Sampson Low, Son and Marston’ used from 1867 to around 1871.

I am looking for volumes 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 with this imprint (in some cases other conditions as well).

2. ‘Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle’ from around 1872 to 1876.

I am looking for volumes 21, 22, 27 and 28 with this imprint

3. ‘Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington’ from 1877 to 1889

I am looking for volumes 30, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 41, 46, 47 with this imprint (in some cases other conditions as well).

4. ‘Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, Limited from 1890 to 1895

I am looking for volumes 50 and 51 with this imprint

5.  ‘Sampson Low, Marston & Company, Limited’ from 1896 on

There are no volumes with this imprint that I am looking for.

The Tauchnitz Magazine

The Tauchnitz Magazine ran for just 24 monthly issues  between August 1891 and July 1893.

I am looking for copies of any issues, either in original magazine format or as bound volumes of several issues together.

English Text-Books and Tauchnitz Pocket Library

I am looking for any books in this series, with either English Text-Books or Tauchnitz Pocket Library at the top of the front cover.

Tauchnitz Students' Series

There are three different series of Tauchnitz Students Editions

  1. Students’ Series for School, College and Home (1886-1917)
  2. Students’ Series Neue Folge (1926 – 1939)
  3. Tauchnitz Students’ Series (1948 – 1950)

I am mostly interested in copies of the first series, particularly any edition at all of volume numbers 8, 14, 17, 20, 22, 29, 33, 35 and 41.  I am also looking for early editions of other volumes in this series, usually ones where the back cover has a list of other Students’ Editions, rather than advertising in German for Tauchnitz Dictionaries.  Sometimes there is also a date at the top of the back cover.

From the Students’ Series Neue Folge, I am looking for any edition at all of volume numbers 26, 29, 33, 39 and 50.   For copies with other numbers, the key is to look at the list of other volumes in the series, on the front end-papers.  If volumes issued later are listed, then it’s unlikely to be a first printing.  If it does appear to be a first printing, there are still quite a few I’m looking for, ideally with the associated dictionary and commentary for German-speaking students.

I am not looking for copies of any books in the third series.
